It All Started with a Joke

It all started with a joke.

When my parents started getting on in years, I remember how my mother started getting apprehensive around her birthdays. Instead of smiles and cake, she would tell me that she’s not looking forward to getting any older. One day it’s walking slower, another it’s hearing problems, and then the dentist hands her a $10,000 bill for a series of visits.

I quipped to her, “What’s the problem of turning eighty? One 80-year-old is worth four 20-year-olds!”

And she laughed, and she laughed, and she laughed.
