What are Younger People Doing about the Problem?

Well, if self-esteem seems to be at risk among the elderly, what are younger people doing about this?

If only they were on as good terms with the elderly as the women with her daughter in the picture above.... Unfortunately, it seems that there a number of people just hacking away at whatever is left!

There is an appalling phenomenon called “ageism”: prejudice and negative stereotypes about people just because of their age, usually old age. Here is a blatant – and significant example:

“In a study published in a 2013 issue of The Gerontologist, researchers looked at how older people were represented in Facebook groups. They found 84 groups devoted to the topic of older adults, but most of these groups had been created by people in their 20s. Nearly 75% of the groups existed to criticize older people and nearly 40% advocated banning them from activities such as driving and shopping.”[1]

I have no idea who in the world would form a group to criticize older people, but it seems that there are over SIXTY FACEBOOK GROUPS (that’s 75% of 84 groups) out there working on that. Now, isn’t that going to hack away at whatever self-esteem those senior citizens have left?

As far as driving, it does makes sense to verify from time to time that an elderly driver is still nimble enough to keep up with traffic, but why ban senior citizens from shopping?! (Maybe the people leading those groups want to inherit fat estates….)

Seen enough of what’s going on? Then read the next blog of this series to find what should be going on….
