Thinking Big, Thinking Ahead

We explained some basics for one-on-one relationships with senior citizens in the previous blog.

However, preserving self-esteem among senior citizens is not just an individual, private issue. We have already mentioned that it is widespread enough to be a communal issue.

So on the public front, we need to work to make the community understand what’s the problem, where’s it coming from, what harm it can cause, and how extensive it is.

Once that gets across, then the response will be, “Well, what can we do to fix it?” The day we reach that stage, we will have gotten over the hard part; someone who WANTS to change something will succeed.

In the meantime, we will need to write a lot of blogs to explain the various aspects related to self-esteem, both its roots and its effects.

The final step is to address the juniors, i.e. people who are not senior citizens.

The obvious aspect is ageism. Ageism needs to be identified and fought.

Besides that, though, is a more subtle aspect: to work on society as a whole, to reconstruct the self-esteem of the juniors, so that it won’t collapse when they reach old age.

Someone who prides himself on physical strength is going to be very embarrassed when he needs to walk with a walker. Physical strength is great, but pride in it can be risky. Shifting to durable values when you’re young pays back tenfold when you’re old.

A professional athlete knows that around age 50 or so, he or she will have to switch from “player” to “coach.” The trouble is that the rest of us, who aren’t athletes, get surprised when those changes sneak up on us, and sometimes uproot significant parts of our lives without much warning.

Establishing better goals and more durable values in advance will make the transition a lot more palatable.
